YouTube rolls out an AI playlist generator for Premium users

YouTube is rolling out a new AI-powered playlist generation feature for Premium users on iOS and Android. This tool allows subscribers to create playlists using simple text or voice prompts. To get started, users can go to the Library tab, tap the “New” button, and select the “AI playlist” option. They can then describe the kind of playlist they want with prompts like “raging death metal,” “sad post rock,” “progressive house mix for a chill party,” “indie pop,” or “90s classic hits.”

YouTube has been experimenting with AI for playlist creation for some time. Back in July 2024, the company was testing a feature in the U.S. that let users create custom radio stations using prompts. This new feature represents a broader rollout of that AI capability.

YouTube is not alone in this space. Other major streaming services, including Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer, have also introduced their own AI-powered playlist or radio creation tools.

This move is part of YouTube’s ongoing effort to make its Premium subscription more appealing. Earlier in the same week, the company began an experiment restricting some free users from viewing song lyrics on the YouTube Music app, though lyrics remain available to the vast majority of free listeners.

Google’s subscription business is growing, with YouTube being a key driver. The company recently reported it now has 325 million paying users across its Google One and YouTube Premium services.
