Spotify upgraded its AI DJ feature on Wednesday. This update is available to Premium subscribers and introduces several new features. The most notable addition is the ability to send music requests by typing, not just by using your voice. This new text request feature works for both English and Spanish.
The Spanish-language AI DJ, known as DJ Livi, can now accept music requests through text. Earlier this year, the AI DJ was updated to accept voice requests, moving beyond only playing music that Spotify’s algorithm selects. Until now, that voice request feature was limited to the English-language DJ.
Texting with an AI assistant has become a common practice due to the popularity of chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini. These services allow for multi-modal inputs, letting users switch between talking, typing, or uploading files. As people have grown accustomed to shifting between input methods, it is a natural progression for Spotify’s AI to accept text input. This is especially useful for users who are commuting, in public, or in quiet spaces where they do not wish to speak aloud.
In addition to the new texting feature, Spotify says the AI DJ will now offer personalized prompt suggestions. These prompts are designed to help inspire you if you are unsure what to listen to next.
To access the DJ, you can search for the term “DJ” on Spotify and then press play to begin a curated music selection. If you wish to change the music, you can tap the DJ button on the screen and offer your suggestion by voice or text. Spotify notes that the DJ can handle complex requests that combine genre, mood, artist, or a specific activity. The feature is currently live in English and Spanish in over 60 markets worldwide.
