X to launch marketplace for buying inactive handles

X is launching a marketplace for inactive handles that will allow Premium subscribers to request and purchase usernames. The marketplace will offer both free and paid options for requesting or acquiring eligible handles. The company states that rare handles could be priced anywhere from $2,500 to over seven figures.

The platform defines “Priority” handles as usernames that often include full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations. Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers can request these handles for free. If a request is approved, X will transfer the handle to the user at no cost. However, if a user cancels or downgrades their subscription, their old handle will return to their account after a 30-day grace period. Examples of “Priority” handles include usernames like GabrielJones, PizzaEater, and ParadoxAI.

The launch of this new marketplace is expected to boost X’s revenue through direct payments. It is also anticipated to increase interest in its Premium subscription offering.

The social network clarifies that not all requests are approved and that reviews are typically completed within three business days. Once a request is approved, the user’s old handle is reserved and will not be given to anyone else.

“Rare” handles include short, generic, or culturally significant names. These handles will not be available through standard requests. Instead, they will be offered through public drops and direct, pre-priced purchases available by invitation only.

For public drops, multiple people can apply for a handle. X says selection is based on a user’s past contributions on the platform, their intended use of the handle, and their overall engagement and reach on the social network.

For direct purchases, pricing is determined by several factors, such as the popularity of the word, its character length, and its cultural significance. Once a handle is purchased, the user keeps it permanently, even if their Premium subscription ends. Examples of “Rare” handles include usernames like Pizza, Tom, and One.

X explained that it is launching the marketplace instead of releasing inactive handles all at once to prevent bot spam and misuse. The company stated that the marketplace allows for a fair and secure distribution through a controlled process.

If a user has a specific inactive handle in mind that is not currently on the marketplace, they can register their interest to add it to a watchlist. If that handle becomes available, X will notify them.
