WordPress.com, the website hosting platform from Automattic, has announced a new built-in AI assistant. This feature is designed to work directly inside a website, understanding its content and layout so site owners can make changes using natural language commands.
With this tool, you can adjust your site’s layout, style, or other design patterns by simply telling the AI what you want. The company notes that instructions do not need to be perfectly crafted prompts. You can use general language like “make this section feel more modern or spacious,” “change my site’s colors to be brighter and bolder,” or “give me more font options that feel clean and professional.”
You can also direct the AI to modify your layout, asking it to “add a contact page” or “add a testimonials section below this section.” It is important to note that these AI adjustments only work with block themes, not classic ones. If you are using a classic theme, the assistant will not appear in the editor.
The WordPress AI assistant can also update your site’s content. You can ask it to rewrite your bio to sound more confident or translate a section into another language.
Additionally, the AI functions as an editor, offering headline suggestions, fact checks, and grammar and editing advice. This aspect is available in the block notes editor introduced in WordPress 6.9, where you can collaborate with teammates. You can involve the AI in this workflow by typing @ai followed by your request. The AI will then provide answers, including relevant links and citations from external sources.
For visual help, the assistant uses Google Gemini’s Nano Banana AI models to create new images or edit existing ones. Accessible via a new “Generate Image” button in the Media Library, you can specify requirements like aspect ratios or dictate specific image styles.
The company states that the WordPress AI Assistant is an opt-in feature. To enable it, users need to visit their Sites list after logging in, click their site name, and go to Settings. Under Settings, they should scroll down to “AI tools” and toggle the “Enable AI assistant” setting on. Customers who purchase a website with the AI website builder will have the assistant enabled automatically.
