Volkswagen begins testing its self-driving microbuses in Los Angeles ahead oflaunch with Uber

MOIA America, a Volkswagen subsidiary, and Uber have begun testing autonomous microbuses in Los Angeles. This is the latest step toward launching a commercial robotaxi service by late 2026. Testing will start soon with about ten autonomous Volkswagen ID. Buzz vehicles, which seat four people. Los Angeles was chosen for its history of embracing new mobility technologies. The vehicles will initially have a human safety operator, with driverless operations expected in 2027. The companies plan to eventually scale the fleet to over 100 vehicles. Before a commercial launch, MOIA America must secure permits from California regulators. Uber has multiple autonomous vehicle partnerships, including with Waymo in the U.S. and other companies globally for robotaxis and delivery services.
