Uber has agreed to acquire the delivery business of Turkey’s Getir, a company once celebrated as a major success in the country’s startup ecosystem. The announcement was made on Monday.
Under the terms of the deal, Uber will pay $335 million upfront to purchase Getir’s food delivery business. Additionally, the ride-hailing giant will invest $100 million for a 15% stake in Getir’s separate grocery, retail, and water delivery division, with plans to fully acquire that business over the next few years.
Uber is acquiring the business from Getir’s largest shareholder, the Emirati sovereign wealth fund Mubadala. Reports from last year indicated Mubadala was exploring a sale of its stake in the company.
This agreement concludes a turbulent period for Getir, which once reached a valuation of $12 billion before dramatically scaling back its operations. Founded in 2015, the startup initially saw rapid growth. It invested aggressively to expand in the U.S. and European markets, both organically and through acquisitions, a strategy that accelerated during the pandemic.
However, as pandemic lockdowns ended, consumer demand for food and grocery delivery softened. In 2024, Getir moved to cut its losses, shutting down operations and laying off thousands of employees in the U.S., U.K., and Europe to refocus on its home market in Turkey.
Nearly a year ago, the company faced an internal struggle for control over a restructuring plan proposed by Mubadala. One of Getir’s co-founders opposed the plan and sued to fight what was termed an “illegal coup,” but a Dutch court ultimately rejected the founder’s legal appeals.
To date, Getir has raised a total of $2.40 billion in funding. Court documents filed by the company last year valued its group assets at $374 million.
In a statement, Waleed Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi, deputy group CEO at Mubadala, said, “This transaction reflects the strength of the business and the progress it has made, particularly over the last year.”
Uber plans to integrate the newly acquired business with Trendyol Go, a Turkish food and grocery delivery service it purchased for $700 million last May. Uber noted that Getir’s food delivery business alone recorded gross bookings exceeding $1 billion in 2025, a 50% increase from the previous year.
This acquisition follows a strong performance by Uber’s delivery segment in the fourth quarter, which reported revenue of $4.89 billion, a 30% year-over-year increase. The company stated that Europe, the Middle East, and Asia were its fastest-growing regions for the delivery business in 2026.
