Truecaller is discontinuing its call recording feature on iOS, just over two years after its launch. The Swedish company has decided to focus on its core services: spam call blocking and Live Caller ID. Starting September 30, the feature will no longer be available for iPhone users. Those with saved recordings can download them, share them via email or messaging apps, or switch storage to iCloud to retain access after the discontinuation.
Nakul Kabra, Truecaller’s head of iOS, explained that the decision was driven by the company’s goal to prioritize its primary offerings. Call recording on iOS has always been more complex than on Android due to Apple’s restrictions, requiring a workaround involving a recording line that merges calls. This method increased costs and technical challenges, ultimately leading to the feature’s removal.
Truecaller first introduced call recording for iOS in June 2023, alongside its reintroduction on Android. The feature, along with native call transcription, was later expanded to India. However, Apple’s introduction of native call recording and transcription in iOS 18.1 last year further reduced the need for third-party solutions like Truecaller’s. Apple’s built-in feature eliminates the need for a recording line and includes AI-powered transcriptions.
Despite the change, Truecaller continues to offer premium features such as real-time caller ID, advanced spam blocking, Siri shortcuts, and incognito mode. The company has around 3 million subscribers globally, with iOS contributing 44% of its premium revenue, according to its second-quarter financial results.
A support page has been set up to assist users during the transition period. Truecaller’s move reflects its strategy to streamline services while maintaining its focus on combating spam calls.
