TikTok now lets users send voice notes and images in DMs

TikTok is introducing new ways for users to interact through direct messages. The company announced on Friday that users can now send voice notes and share up to nine images or videos in both one-to-one and group chats on the platform.

These new features represent a strategic move for TikTok to evolve beyond being just an entertainment platform. The goal is to become a space where users regularly interact with each other beyond simply sharing videos. The update also brings TikTok’s messaging experience closer to that of other popular social apps.

The voice note feature allows users to record and send audio messages up to 60 seconds long. This addition aligns with a growing communication trend, particularly among younger users, and matches capabilities already available on services like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s Messages.

For photo and video sharing, users can capture new content with their camera or select existing media from their camera roll. They also have the option to edit this content before sending it.

TikTok has implemented several safety measures for these new features. Users cannot send an image or video as an initial message request. This means a first-time sender can only share content already available on TikTok, not personal media.

The platform also includes privacy reminders, prompting users to be mindful of who they are sending content to. For younger users, additional protections are in place. Direct messages are unavailable to users under 16, and automated systems are active for users aged 16 to 18 to detect and block images containing nudity. The system prevents the sending and receiving of such images. Users over 18 can choose to enable this safety feature in their app settings.

These new features are seen as a way for users to express themselves and connect with others using familiar communication methods. This development is part of TikTok’s broader effort to enhance its messaging product, which last year included the launch of group chats for up to 32 people and the recent introduction of Creator Chat Rooms for dedicated interaction between creators and their followers.

The voice note feature is scheduled to roll out over the next few weeks.
