TikTok adds new parental controls, tools for creators

TikTok announced on Wednesday the release of several new features, including enhanced parental controls, additional tools for creators, and an interactive well-being feature. The platform also publicly launched Footnotes, its fact-checking system.

The social network is introducing new parental controls within Family Pairing, a feature that allows parents to link their accounts with their teen’s account to customize safety settings. Parents can now block specific accounts for their teen, preventing those accounts from interacting with the teen or appearing in their feed.

Parents will also receive automatic notifications when their teen uploads a public video, story, or photo. TikTok states this will help parents stay informed about their teen’s posts without interfering with their creativity. Additionally, parents gain more visibility into their teen’s privacy settings, such as whether downloads are enabled for their content or if their following list is visible to others.

For creators, TikTok is rolling out “Creator Care Mode,” which automatically filters offensive, inappropriate, or profane comments. The feature also targets comments from users whose previous remarks have been reported, disliked, or deleted. Using AI, the tool learns from a creator’s moderation habits, reducing the likelihood of unwanted comments appearing in their section.

A new comment tool for TikTok Live allows creators to block specific words entirely. Users who attempt to comment with the blocked phrase will be muted for a duration set by the creator.

To streamline communication, TikTok is launching the “Creator Inbox,” a professional inbox experience with folders like “Unread” and “Starred.” Creators can also set up custom responses for frequently asked questions and use quick replies for efficiency.

The platform is officially introducing “Creator Chat Room,” its version of Instagram’s broadcast channels. These spaces allow creators to share exclusive updates, gather feedback, or promote events. Access is limited to creators aged 18 or older with at least 5,000 followers and either a Subscription or Live Fan Club. Chats are capped at 300 participants, and creators can host up to 20 different chats.

Another new feature, “Content Check Lite,” lets users verify if their content is eligible for the For You feed before posting. TikTok is also testing a broader “Content Check” tool to help creators ensure their posts comply with Community Guidelines before going live.

Finally, TikTok announced “Well-being Missions,” a series of short quizzes and interactive flashcards designed to promote balanced digital habits. Users earn badges as they complete these missions. The platform is also developing a dedicated digital well-being experience with tools like breathing exercises, calming audio tracks, and screen time insights to help users recharge.
