The anonymous social app that thinks it can work in Saudi Arabia

Fizz, the anonymous social app that began on college campuses, is expanding globally. Its new Global Fizz feed is helping it reach beyond students. The app recently launched in Saudi Arabia and became the number one overall App Store download there within 48 hours. Founders Teddy Solomon and Ashton Cofer started Fizz at Stanford in 2022. The app has raised $40 million and operates on 700 campuses. Its global feed allows non-students to join location-based communities, with optional anonymity, similar to Reddit but without topic-specific groups.

The launch followed a marketing analyst moving to Saudi Arabia to understand the culture. The country is undergoing social and economic changes under its Vision 2030 plan, which includes major tech investments. However, Saudi Arabia remains an absolute monarchy with strict speech laws. Fizz says it has no Saudi investment or government contact. When asked about potential content takedowns or arrests, Solomon said they would “cross that bridge” later. The app uses AI tools and hundreds of local volunteer moderators to oversee content, aiming to abide by local rules while keeping the platform safe.
