The 10 top government, legal startups from Disrupt Startup Battlefield

Every year, TechCrunch’s Startup Battlefield pitch contest draws thousands of applicants. We narrow those applications down to the top 200 contenders. From that group, the top 20 compete on the main stage for the Startup Battlefield Cup and a cash prize of $100,000. However, the remaining 180 startups also impressed us greatly across their categories and participate in their own pitch competition. Here is the full list of the government and legal sector selectees for the Startup Battlefield 200, along with a note on why each company stood out.

APARTI uses AI to automate legal intake forms and other documents for family law firms. It is noteworthy because it currently specializes in divorce cases, tackling an issue not commonly addressed by the current wave of AI legal technology.

ASCENDER has created a robot that can climb utility poles and flagpoles to assist with humanitarian aid and disaster response. It is part of a new wave of robotic technology emerging to better address disaster situations.

BOT MEDIATION uses AI to help settle legal disputes. This represents another interesting use case in legal AI, aiming to make the mediation and dispute resolution process more efficient.

DEPTH AI creates AI for spatial computing, building models such as holographic imaging that can be used in healthcare to create 3D images of the body for diagnosing illness. This technology seeks to improve the healthcare industry.

ILIAS AI operates in “scent tech,” using AI to develop olfactory technology that can, for example, help dogs detect the smell of drugs. This approach is uncommon, particularly in its application to technological innovation.

JUSTIGUIDE connects immigrants with lawyers and tools to make the immigration process more efficient. As the winner of the policy and protection pitch stage at Disrupt this year, it addresses the often painstaking and tedious process of immigration.

ORCHESTRA created a camera network to manage public safety and detect crime. This is a modern take on the security network systems that have existed for decades.

PONDEROSA AI uses drones to help detect and control small fires. This is very timely, as fires can quickly grow out of control and cause catastrophic damage, so technology that mitigates that risk is crucial.

PYTHO AI aims to make the planning process more efficient for warfighters on the battlefield. Innovation in battlefield technology is always an interesting and curious area.

SHOTHAWK AI created a device that helps track, detect, and subdue active shooters with pepper gel. It was founded in 2023 by Brandon Johnson, Ohm Vyas, and Ved Vyas. This innovation addresses the rising rate of gun crime in public places like schools and supermarkets.

TORCH SYSTEMS monitors high-value assets, assessing air quality, fire risks, and security to help prevent wildfires early. As climate change leads to more devastating wildfires, any innovation that helps reduce the impact of such catastrophic events is valuable.
