Tesla is falling short of its goal to produce at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year, according to a report from The Information. With nearly eight months of 2025 already passed, the company has only manufactured a few hundred units. This slow pace means Tesla will either need to accelerate production or delay its target.
The update follows Tesla’s second-quarter earnings report, which revealed a 12% drop in overall revenue. The decline was driven by weaker electric vehicle sales, reduced income from regulatory credits, and lower sales in solar and energy storage.
During the Q2 earnings call earlier this week, Elon Musk announced that Tesla plans to begin production of its latest Optimus 3 design by early next year. He emphasized the company’s ambition to ramp up production quickly, aiming for one million units annually within five years.
However, Musk has a history of making ambitious projections that don’t always materialize. In 2019, he predicted Tesla would have a million robotaxis on the road by 2020. Later, in 2022, he claimed the company would mass-produce robotaxis by 2024. Neither of these forecasts has been achieved so far.
