Netflix and Spotify have joined forces to launch a golf-inspired game to promote “Happy Gilmore 2,” the sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 comedy film, which premieres on Netflix this Friday, July 25.
This collaboration marks a new venture for Spotify, as the music platform has never partnered with another company to create a gaming experience within its app before. Gaming is an area Spotify has largely overlooked, making this partnership with Netflix notable, even if it’s just for a promotional campaign. The initiative could serve as a test to gauge consumer interest in such experiences. Given the game’s connection to a beloved cult classic, it also presents a unique opportunity to boost engagement.
Spotify developed the game in partnership with MiK Studio. Titled “Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament,” the mini-game is available exclusively within the Spotify app. Players must perfect their golf swing by tapping their device to complete all three holes.
The game offers an immersive audio-visual experience, featuring movie clips when users finish each round, along with a personalized playlist of upbeat tracks curated for the player. Hidden Easter eggs include Happy’s boots, his signature hockey stick, and an alligator.
At the end of the game, users can watch the official “Happy Gilmore 2” trailer and share their personalized playlist and final score on social media.
While this is Spotify’s first collaboration for an in-app game, the platform previously released a hidden game called “Eat This Playlist” in 2023. That game was a variation of the classic Snake arcade game, where players controlled a growing snake while avoiding obstacles.
