Spotify has expanded its social features by introducing group chats. This new feature allows users to share podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks with groups of up to ten people. The rollout follows the initial launch of a direct messaging feature last August.
To start a group chat, you must have previously shared content with the other users. This includes connections made through collaborative playlists or by joining a Jam or Blend session together.
This move is part of Spotify’s ongoing investment to make its streaming application more social. The company has steadily added social elements over the years, such as podcast comments and the ability to follow friends to see what they are listening to.
Spotify has previously stated that its messaging feature is designed to complement, not replace, sharing content on other platforms. Users are still encouraged to share music and podcasts outside the app.
All messages sent through the feature are encrypted both at rest and in transit. It is important to note, however, that these messages do not use end-to-end encryption.
