Spotify rolls out AI-powered Prompted Playlists to the UK and other markets

Spotify has announced the expansion of its AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature. After initial testing in New Zealand and a recent launch in the United States and Canada, the tool is now rolling out to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.

The Prompted Playlist feature allows users to create custom playlists by simply describing what they want to hear. Instead of searching for specific songs or artists, users can describe a vibe, scenario, or inspiration in their own words. Spotify’s AI then generates a playlist to match the request.

To use the feature, users tap “Create” and select “Prompted Playlist,” then enter any prompt in English. The system is designed to interpret a wide range of themes, including moods, aesthetics, and memories. Prompts can be broad or very specific, referencing musical eras, genres, activities, instruments, lyrics, or even a favorite TV show or personal milestone. Users can also specify if they want the playlist to include mostly new discoveries or music from their personal library.

Once a prompt is submitted, the AI creates a customized playlist. It draws on the user’s listening history and incorporates current music and cultural trends. Each song on the playlist includes a short explanation for why it was chosen.

Users can refine their results by adjusting their original prompt or starting over. For evolving tastes, playlists can be scheduled to automatically refresh on a daily or weekly basis.

As this is still a beta feature, Spotify notes there may be changes based on user feedback. The company has also implemented usage limits, with some users reporting hitting a cap after roughly twenty to thirty prompts.

This launch is part of a broader expansion of AI features across Spotify’s platform. Other recent additions include Page Match, which lets users scan a physical book page to jump to the corresponding section in an audiobook, and About the Song, which provides background information on tracks. The platform has also updated its lyrics feature to offer global translations and offline access.

Separately, Spotify recently partnered with SeatGeek to help listeners find concert ticket links directly on an artist’s page within the app.

Internally, Spotify is deeply integrating AI into its workflows. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated earlier this month that the company’s best developers have not written a line of code since December, thanks to AI assistance.

Spotify is also expanding its audiobook business by venturing into physical book sales. Soon, users in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to purchase physical copies of books directly through the Spotify app.
