Spotify rolls out AI-powered Prompted Playlists to the U.K. and other markets

Spotify is expanding access to its AI-powered “Prompted Playlists” feature. After initial tests in New Zealand and a recent launch in the U.S. and Canada, the tool is now rolling out to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.

Prompted Playlists allows users to create custom playlists by simply describing what they want to hear. Instead of searching for specific songs or artists, you can describe a vibe, scenario, or inspiration in your own words. Spotify’s AI will then generate the playlist for you.

To use the feature, tap “Create” and then select “Prompted Playlist.” You then enter any prompt in English. The tool is designed to interpret a wide range of themes, including moods, aesthetics, and memories. Your prompts can be broad or very specific. You can reference musical eras, genres, activities, lyrics, or instruments. You can even ask for a playlist inspired by a TV show, movie, or a personal milestone. Users can also specify if they want the playlist to focus on new music or draw primarily from their existing library.

Once you submit a prompt, Spotify’s AI creates a customized playlist. It uses your personal listening history and incorporates current music and cultural trends to make the selection. Each song on the generated playlist includes a short explanation for why it was chosen.

You can refine your results by adjusting your original prompt or starting over completely. For listeners who want fresh music regularly, playlists can be scheduled to automatically refresh on a daily or weekly basis.

Since this is a beta feature, Spotify notes there may be changes based on user feedback. There are currently usage limits in place, with some users reporting hitting a limit after roughly 20 to 30 prompts.

This launch is part of a broader expansion of AI features across Spotify’s platform. Other recent additions include Page Match, which lets users scan a physical book page to jump to that spot in an audiobook, and About This Song, which provides background information on tracks. The platform has also updated its lyrics feature to offer global translations and offline access.

Separately, Spotify recently partnered with SeatGeek to help listeners easily find concert ticket links on an artist’s page within the app.

Internally, Spotify is deeply integrating AI into its workflows. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated earlier this month that the company’s best developers haven’t written a line of code since December, thanks to AI assistance.

Spotify is also growing its audiobook business by venturing into physical book sales. Soon, users in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to purchase physical copies of books directly through the Spotify app.
