Sora for Android saw nearly half a million installs on its first day

Sora’s launch on Android is off to a very strong start. According to new estimates from app intelligence provider Appfigures, the AI video app from OpenAI saw an estimated 470,000 downloads on its first day on the Google Play Store. This makes the Android launch more than four times larger than the iOS launch, with 327 percent more installs. However, this is not a direct comparison.

On iOS, Sora was initially available only in the United States and Canada and required an invite. For the Android launch, OpenAI made the app available in the US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. The company also removed the invite requirement for its top markets in late October.

The app was a breakout hit following its debut despite its earlier exclusive status. The iOS app achieved over a million installs within its first week and quickly rose to the top of the App Store. It currently holds the number four position on the US App Store’s iPhone Top Free Charts.

With Sora, users leverage AI to create videos from text prompts. A feature known as Cameos allows users to animate themselves and their friends using AI. The videos are displayed in a scrollable, vertical feed similar to TikTok, where users can see what others are creating.

Appfigures has also revised its earlier estimates for the first-day iOS downloads of Sora. Originally, the firm’s models indicated around 56,000 day-one downloads. With more data over time, the model now more accurately predicts that the figure was closer to 110,000, with approximately 69,300 of those being US installs.

By comparison, the Sora Android app saw roughly 296,000 installs in the United States out of its 470,000 total. This indicates sustained interest in the AI video maker even after the initial buzz from the iOS launch has subsided.

Sora also faces competition from Meta AI, which released its mobile app to European users following its earlier debut in the United States.
