Snapchat is introducing a new Lens that allows users to create and edit images with a text-to-image AI generator. This feature, called the Imagine Lens, is exclusively available to Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers. It enables users to create, edit, and recreate Snaps by typing in their own custom prompts. The resulting images can be shared with friends, posted to a Story, or sent outside of Snapchat.
While the platform already offers many generative AI Lenses, the company highlights that Imagine Lens is its first to allow open prompt image generation. Users can type in any idea, such as “create an image of a grumpy cat” or “turn me into an alien.” The Lens also provides pre-loaded prompts to use, including “Turn me into a four to five panel comic where something unexpected but heroic happens,” “Make me into a funny caricature,” and “Make this person skydive.” A tap on the caption bar lets users edit the prompt to anything they desire.
Earlier this year, Snap unveiled an AI text-to-image research model for mobile devices that was planned to power future Snapchat features. The company did not confirm if this specific model drives the new Lens, but noted that its Lenses are built using a combination of in-house models and industry-leading AI technologies.
Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers can locate the new Lens at the front of the Lens Carousel or within the Exclusive category. After selecting the Lens, they can tap the caption to enter or edit their prompt. A Platinum subscription is priced at $15.99 per month, while a Lens+ subscription costs $8.99 per month.
Snap has long been considered a leader in augmented reality and has also been investing significantly in AI alongside other major tech companies. A few months ago, the company launched a standalone Lens Studio iOS app and web tool designed to simplify the process of creating AR Lenses with AI and simple tools. It also rolled out its first-ever video generative AI Lenses in March.
