Roblox announces short-form video feed for gameplay clips, new AI tools forcreators, and more

Roblox has unveiled a new short-form video feature called Roblox Moments. The announcement was made on Friday at the Roblox Developers Conference. This new experience, currently in beta for users aged 13 and older, allows players to capture up to 30 seconds of their gameplay. Users can then edit their clips by adding music and writing a description before sharing them to a scrollable community feed.

Within this feed, users can watch clips shared by others, react to them using emojis, and even jump directly into a game from a video. Later this year, Roblox plans to release API-based capabilities. This will allow creators to build their own in-game systems for showcasing trending clips and creating custom leaderboards.

A gradual rollout of the feature is planned to allow Roblox to test and refine its moderation systems. All content will be subject to moderation before it is posted, and users will have the ability to report inappropriate videos.

The company also announced an increase in earnings for its creators. The Developer Exchange rate is being raised, allowing creators to earn 8.5 percent more when they convert their earned Robux into cash. Now, 100,000 earned Robux will be worth $380, up from the previous $350. The company stated this reinforces its dedication to fostering a thriving economy for creators, noting that the average revenue for a Top 1000 developer was almost $1 million, a significant increase since 2020.

New AI tools were also introduced. These updates are designed to offer greater artistic freedom and smarter development assistance. A key advancement allows creators to generate fully functional objects, not just static 3D models. For example, a creator could prompt the AI to generate a “sleek, futuristic red sports car,” and the platform would produce an interactive vehicle that can be driven and customized.

Additionally, a new real-time voice chat translation capability will be launched next year. This feature will instantly translate voice chat for players speaking English, Spanish, French, and German into the listener’s native language. New text-to-speech and speech-to-text APIs were also announced. The text-to-speech API provides instant narration with customizable voice presets, while the speech-to-text API supports voice commands for gameplay actions.

Roblox announced advancements in performance and fidelity. A new mode called Server Authority reduces in-game cheating and makes physics interactions more realistic. Avatars will soon feature more lifelike motions such as running, climbing, and vaulting over obstacles with natural momentum. Improvements are also coming for complex actions like grasping items with fingers. Further updates will allow the platform to run at a higher fidelity across various devices without creators needing to do extra work.

These updates follow a recent announcement from Roblox that it is expanding its age-estimation technology to all users and partnering with the International Age Rating Coalition to introduce standardized age and content ratings for games on its platform. These developments occur amid ongoing lawsuits concerning child safety.
