Two years after revealing its affordable next-generation EV, Rivian has shared all of the pricing, colors, and performance specs for its upcoming R2 SUV. As with many new car releases, the details are complicated.
Rivian’s bid to sell a more accessible EV will cost between $45,000 and $57,990. These prices vary based on performance and other interior and exterior features. Rivian will eventually offer several versions of its mid-sized R2 SUV, but the first available model will be the most expensive.
The initial model, available in spring 2026, is the R2 Performance with the Launch Package trim. This all-wheel drive dual motor EV offers up to 330 miles of estimated range and starts at $57,990. Rivian will later drop the launch edition label and sell a performance trim, though pricing for that standard version is not yet shared.
A premium version of the R2 will begin production in late 2026. Also a dual-motor all-wheel drive SUV with slightly less horsepower but the same 330-mile range, it will start at $53,990.
Following that, two standard versions will arrive. The “long range” standard R2 is expected in early 2027 with a range of 345 miles and a starting price of $48,490. A cheaper $45,000 standard version with 275 miles of estimated range is scheduled for production in late 2027. Whether Rivian ultimately produces this $45,000 version will likely depend on the initial rollout of its more expensive models.
All R2 trims are built on Rivian’s new mid-sized platform using in-house motors. They each come with an 87.9 kilowatt-hour battery pack and a native North American Charging Standard port. Battery ranges are fairly close across trims, with the exception of the cheapest standard version.
Performance specs change significantly between trims. The Performance Launch Edition delivers 656 horsepower and 609 pound-feet of torque, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. The Premium trim produces 450 horsepower and 537 pound-feet of torque, reaching 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. The Standard Long Range version is rear-wheel drive, producing 350 horsepower and 355 pound-feet of torque with a 0 to 60 mph time of 5.9 seconds. Specs for the cheapest R2 are not yet available.
The R2 SUV is a crucial vehicle for Rivian, carrying high sales goals. It must attract consumers without a prohibitive price tag and be cheaper to build than its flagship models to achieve profitability. For Rivian, the target price mostly sits above $50,000, which is just above the average price paid for a new car in January.
Prospective buyers will have many upgrade options. Every version comes standard in Esker Silver paint. Choosing a different color, like the special “launch green” for the launch edition, will cost extra. Rivian is introducing three new colors: Esker Silver, Catalina Cove blue, and Half Moon Grey grey, alongside its existing palette.
The more expensive Performance Launch Edition and Premium models include extra items like a 9-speaker audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, a heated steering wheel, 12-way adjustable seats, and a birch wood accent interior. They also include a torch flashlight in the driver door.
All new R2 vehicles come with standard advanced driver assistance features. An upgrade called Rivian Autonomy+, which offers hands-free driving on certain highways, is available for a one-time $2,500 fee or $49.99 per month. This is included for those who purchase the Performance Launch Edition.
A notable detail involves the hardware for automated driving. Starting in late 2026, Rivian will begin shipping R2 vehicles equipped with a third-generation autonomy computer and a lidar sensor to support greater levels of automated driving. This more capable hardware will not be in the initial Performance Launch Edition vehicles arriving in spring 2026. This gap may lead some tech-focused buyers to wait for the later models, though those will likely cost more.
