Proton releases a new app for two-factor authentication

Privacy-focused productivity tool company Proton has released a new authenticator app today, allowing users to log in to services using dynamically generated two-factor codes.

The free app is now available across all major platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux. It enables users to sync codes and accounts seamlessly between devices. Like Proton’s other products, the Proton Authenticator is open-source and uses end-to-end encryption to safeguard user data.

Users can easily import login codes from other authentication apps. Additionally, the app automatically backs up codes and functions without an internet connection.

“Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone—not just those who prioritize privacy. Proton Authenticator is designed for anyone seeking a secure, transparent, and convenient way to protect their accounts,” said Eamonn Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton.

“We believe strong security should never compromise convenience or privacy. That’s why we developed Proton Authenticator—to give users peace of mind that their 2FA codes are accessible wherever they need them, without relying on Google or Microsoft. We’re putting users in full control of their data and how they access their online accounts,” he added.

Two-factor authentication via an app provides an extra layer of security, helping prevent unauthorized account access. While SMS-based 2FA is another option, it is often vulnerable to SIM-swapping attacks, where attackers can intercept calls and messages.

Proton has been actively expanding its product lineup. Earlier this week, the company introduced Lumo, a privacy-focused AI chatbot that does not store conversation logs or use user data to train its models.
