ChatGPT’s impressive growth as a consumer app continues, with the chatbot on track to reach 700 million weekly active users this week. Earlier this year, the app had already hit 500 million weekly active users by the end of March, according to Nick Turley, OpenAI VP and head of ChatGPT’s app. He also mentioned that the app has grown four times since last year.
Turley highlighted how people and teams are using ChatGPT daily to learn, create, and solve complex problems. He expressed gratitude to the team for making the app more useful and advancing OpenAI’s mission to ensure everyone benefits from AI.
The app’s popularity surged after OpenAI introduced an upgraded image generation feature in March, powered by the GPT-4 model. By early April, more than 130 million users had created over 700 million images within just a few days of the feature’s launch.
OpenAI has also seen a rise in subscribers. Last week, the company’s COO, Brad Lightcap, revealed that ChatGPT now has 5 million paying business users, up from 3 million in June.
A recent report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower showed that users engage with ChatGPT for more than 12 days a month on average, placing it just behind Google and X in usage. The report also noted that in the first half of 2025, users spent an average of 16 minutes per day on the app.
