OpenAI buys tiny health records startup Torch for, reportedly, $100M

OpenAI has acquired a small startup named Torch for an undisclosed sum. According to an unnamed source, the deal was valued at approximately one hundred million dollars worth of equity. The four-person team from Torch will be joining OpenAI as part of the acquisition.

Torch was developing an application designed to consolidate an individual’s medical information from various sources for AI utilization. These sources included doctor visits, lab tests, wearable device data, consumer wellness tests, and other health portals. The team described their technology as a medical memory for AI, aiming to unify scattered health records into a cohesive context engine.

The Torch team originally met while working at Forward Health, a company known for its AI-powered doctors’ offices. Forward Health ceased operations in late 2024 after having raised over four hundred million dollars. This acquisition represents a new path for the Torch team and their technology.

The team and its work will be integrated into OpenAI’s recently announced service, ChatGPT Health. This service is intended for users who employ the chatbot to analyze and manage their personal health information.
