OpenAI and Amazon ink $38B cloud computing deal

OpenAI continues to secure the AI infrastructure necessary to rapidly scale its agentic workloads. The maker of ChatGPT announced on Monday that it has reached a deal with Amazon to purchase thirty-eight billion dollars in cloud computing services over the next seven years. OpenAI stated it will begin using AWS compute immediately, with all capacity planned for deployment before the end of 2026. The agreement also includes the ability to expand further into 2027 and beyond.

This new deal follows a recent restructuring at OpenAI which freed the company from needing Microsoft’s approval to purchase computing services from other firms. The Amazon agreement is part of a larger mission to grow computing power, with plans to spend more than one trillion dollars over the next decade.

The company has announced several new data center buildouts with partners including Oracle, SoftBank, and the United Arab Emirates. OpenAI has also secured significant deals with chipmakers such as Nvidia, AMD, and Broadcom.

Some analysts view the increased investment from OpenAI and other tech giants as a signal that the industry is heading towards an AI bubble. They suggest massive sums are being spent to build out an unproven and potentially dangerous technology without a clear sign of a meaningful return on investment.
