Nvidia announced on Monday that it plans to invest up to one hundred billion dollars in OpenAI. This investment is part of a deal to build massive data centers for training and running advanced artificial intelligence models. The companies have signed a letter of intent to deploy ten gigawatts worth of Nvidia systems. This amount of power is enough to supply millions of homes and will be used to power the next generation of OpenAI’s AI infrastructure.
This partnership may help OpenAI by reducing its reliance on Microsoft, which is its largest investor and primary supplier of cloud computing resources. Earlier this year, Microsoft announced changes to its partnership with OpenAI. These changes allow OpenAI to build additional AI infrastructure with other partners. Since that time, OpenAI has teamed up with various companies on data center projects.
Nvidia states that this new deal will complement OpenAI’s existing partnerships, which include agreements with Microsoft, Oracle, and SoftBank. OpenAI has said it will work with Nvidia as a preferred strategic partner for compute and networking to support its growth. It is currently unclear whether Nvidia’s investment will be made in the form of chips, cloud credits, cash, or another method.
