Red Dead Redemption has joined the Netflix gaming catalog. This is a major moment for fans, as it marks the game’s first official release on iOS and Android devices. Anyone with a Netflix subscription can now download the title, which features mobile-friendly touch-screen controls for shooting and navigation. It is important to note that this version does not include a multiplayer mode and requires a constant internet connection, as offline play is not supported.
Originally launched by Rockstar Games in 2010, Red Dead Redemption is set in 1911 during the Wild West. Players take on the role of former outlaw John Marston as he searches for his kidnapped family. The mobile release also includes the standalone expansion “Undead Nightmare,” which follows Marston confronting a zombie outbreak.
Adding Red Dead Redemption is a significant move for Netflix’s gaming strategy. The company has historically faced challenges in this area, with less than one percent of its subscribers engaging with its games in previous years. However, Netflix’s investment showed promising growth in 2024, when estimates indicated game downloads increased by 180 percent year-over-year.
Red Dead Redemption is one of Rockstar’s most beloved franchises, second only to Grand Theft Auto. It has a dedicated fan base, with some speculating about a potential prequel announcement. This new mobile version could reignite interest in the series.
This launch follows Netflix’s recent expansion of games to smart TVs in October, where subscribers can use their phones as controllers to play party titles like Boggle Party, LEGO Party!, and Pictionary. The rollout also comes two years after Netflix added Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy to its mobile catalog. However, GTA: San Andreas is scheduled to leave Netflix Games on December 12, which will be the last day subscribers can access it.
