Netflix announced on Thursday morning that it is acquiring InterPositive, a filmmaking technology company founded in 2022 by actor Ben Affleck. This acquisition supports Netflix’s ongoing strategy for using generative AI in film production. The company has previously utilized generative AI for special effects in some original content and has assured investors it is well positioned to leverage ongoing advances in artificial intelligence.
In a statement, Ben Affleck explained that he began considering the impact of AI on the future of filmmaking back in 2022. His goal was to preserve human judgment in storytelling and to protect the power of human creativity. InterPositive is not focused on creating AI actors or synthetic performances. Instead, the company has developed a model that assists production teams by working with footage from their own projects to facilitate post-production edits. This includes addressing continuity issues, adjusting lighting, or making enhancements to the environment.
Affleck detailed that intensive research led to their first model, which is trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency while preserving cinematic rules. It is designed to tackle real-world production challenges like missing shots, background replacements, or incorrect lighting. The technology also incorporates built-in restraints to protect creative intent. These tools are meant for responsible exploration, keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists and ensuring the technology serves the story being told.
As part of the deal, Ben Affleck will join Netflix as a senior advisor. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Elizabeth Stone, Netflix’s chief product and technology officer, stated that the company’s approach to AI has always focused on serving the needs of the creative community and its members. She said the InterPositive team is joining Netflix because of a shared belief that innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them.
