Meta tests a standalone app for its AI-generated ‘Vibes’ videos

Meta confirmed on Thursday that it is testing a standalone Vibes app. Originally launched last September, Vibes allows users to create and share short-form AI-generated videos and browse a dedicated feed of AI videos from other people. The experience is similar to platforms like TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video is entirely AI-generated.

Previously, the Vibes feed was only available inside the Meta AI app. By releasing Vibes as its own separate app, Meta is positioning it to compete more directly with Sora, OpenAI’s AI-generated video and social app, which launched shortly after Vibes.

In a statement, Meta said, “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum. We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.”

The company claims Vibes has performed well, with Meta AI usage growing steadily since launch, though it does not share specific numbers. Meta believes this growth signals a demand for a standalone app, which can offer a more focused experience for creating and engaging with content compared to the broader Meta AI app.

On Vibes, users can generate a video from scratch or remix a video they see in their feed. Before publishing, they can add new visuals, layer in music, and adjust styles. Finished videos can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

Meta notes that collaboration and sharing are increasing, with many Vibes videos being messaged to friends, a pattern that mirrors how people use Instagram Reels.

It is important to note that Meta recently stated it will explore subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. While Vibes has been free since launch, Meta plans to introduce a freemium model. This will offer basic free access to video creation, with a subscription option to unlock additional video creation opportunities each month. These test subscriptions are planned to launch in the coming months.
