Meta confirmed on Thursday that it is testing a stand-alone Vibes app. Originally launched last September, Vibes allows users to create and share short-form AI-generated videos and browse a dedicated feed of AI videos from other people. Think of it like TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video is generated by artificial intelligence.
Previously, the Vibes feed was only available inside the Meta AI app. By offering Vibes as a separate application, Meta is positioning it to compete more directly with Sora, OpenAI’s own AI-generated video and social app, which launched shortly after Vibes.
In a statement, Meta said, “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum. We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.”
The company does not share specific user numbers but claims Vibes has performed well, with Meta AI usage growing steadily since its launch. Meta believes this growth signals a demand for a stand-alone app. The tech giant also notes that while users engage with content in Meta AI, a separate app allows for a more focused experience dedicated to creation and engagement.
On Vibes, users can generate a video from scratch or remix a video they see in their feed. Before publishing, they can add new visuals, layer in music, and adjust styles. The finished video can be posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.
Meta says collaboration and sharing are increasing, with many Vibes videos being messaged directly to friends, a pattern that mirrors how people use Reels.
It is worth noting that Meta recently stated it will explore subscriptions for AI features, including Vibes. Although Vibes has been free since launch, Meta plans to offer freemium access to video creation, with a subscription option to unlock additional video creation opportunities each month. The company plans to launch these test subscriptions in the coming months.
