Meta brings its short-form video feed of AI slop to Europe

Meta announced on Thursday that Vibes, its short-form video feed of AI-generated videos, is launching in Europe in the Meta AI app. Think of it as similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every single video you see is created by artificial intelligence.

This European rollout comes six weeks after Meta first introduced the Vibes feed in the United States. A few days after Meta’s initial launch, OpenAI released its own competing platform called Sora, which is also a social media app for creating and sharing AI-generated videos.

With Vibes, users can create and share short-form AI-generated videos. They also have access to a dedicated feed that displays AI videos from other people. Meta states that this feed will become more personalized to a user’s interests over time.

For content creation, you can generate a video using text prompts or choose to remix someone else’s existing video. The tools allow you to add new visuals, layer in music, or adjust styles to match your individual taste.

Meta described this as an inherently social and collaborative creation experience where users are encouraged to remix, co-create, and build stories together with friends. Videos and content can be shared and posted directly to the Vibes feed, sent to friends, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels.

When Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg first unveiled the feed in September, the user comments on his announcement post were largely critical. Many expressed skepticism about the desire for an AI-generated version of TikTok. One of the top comments simply stated that nobody wants this, while another popular comment referred to the content as AI slop. Another highly visible comment expressed general confusion about the product’s purpose.

While Meta is now embracing AI-generated content, other companies like YouTube are moving in the opposite direction by preparing to crack down on the issue. The rise of AI technology has caused social media platforms to become flooded with what is often termed AI slop, meaning low-quality and repetitive AI content.

Meta’s launch of Vibes is particularly puzzling given the company’s own statements earlier this year. At that time, Meta said it was tackling unoriginal content and advised creators to focus on authentic storytelling rather than producing short videos that offer little value.

Despite this earlier messaging, Meta is now promoting the launch of Vibes. The company reports that media generation in the Meta AI app has increased more than tenfold since the feature’s introduction.
