Intuit signs $100M+ deal with OpenAI to bring its apps to ChatGPT

Intuit has signed a multi-year contract with OpenAI valued at over one hundred million dollars. This agreement will enable Intuit’s tax and financial applications to function directly within ChatGPT. It also expands the company’s use of OpenAI’s models throughout its product lineup.

Through this integration, users will be able to access Intuit tools such as TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks, and Mailchimp inside ChatGPT. They can ask questions and complete various financial tasks. These tasks include estimating tax refunds, reviewing different credit options, and managing business finances.

With user permission, Intuit’s applications will access personal financial data to generate responses and complete actions. These actions can range from sending marketing messages to issuing invoice reminders. Customers can also use the tools within ChatGPT to review credit cards, personal loans, and mortgage options.

This partnership is part of a larger trend where technology and financial companies are adopting large language models for consumer and business software. While other companies like Booking.com and Spotify have also built apps for ChatGPT, Intuit’s integration is distinct. It will be used for tasks that can directly influence a person’s financial decisions, which has raised concerns about the reliability of AI systems that can sometimes produce incorrect information.

To minimize the risk of errors, Intuit employs multiple validation methods and uses large domain-specific datasets. A spokesperson for Intuit, Bruce Chan, explained that their AI draws on deep expertise developed over many years and a comprehensive view of customer data. This approach helps ensure the guidance provided is relevant, grounded in the customer’s own information, and reflects Intuit’s domain knowledge.

Chan stated that Intuit continues to stand behind the accuracy guarantees offered through its products, including TurboTax. However, he did not specify whether the company or the customer would be responsible for errors resulting from AI-generated recommendations.

Intuit has been expanding its use of artificial intelligence in recent years. In 2023, the company introduced Intuit Assist, an AI assistant that works across its product ecosystem. The new partnership with OpenAI further deepens this commitment. Intuit will expand its use of OpenAI’s frontier models to power select AI agents across its platform.

The company already uses AI models from OpenAI alongside other commercial and open-source large language models. This partnership will provide Intuit access to new audiences through ChatGPT, creating another distribution channel for its small-business and consumer finance tools. The deal also includes Intuit’s continued use of ChatGPT Enterprise, which is deployed internally to support employee workflows.
