Instagram is now applying content restrictions for teen accounts internationally. This follows a rollout last October in countries like the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia. The rules are inspired by 13+ movie ratings and aim to limit teens’ exposure to themes of extreme violence, sexual nudity, graphic drug use, strong language, and risky stunts. The platform will hide or not recommend such posts.
The company also offers a “Limited Content” setting with stricter filters. Instagram acknowledges differences between movies and social media but aims for a similar safety standard. This expansion comes after Meta faced legal accountability for harming teens in New Mexico and Los Angeles courts. The company has recently introduced other safety features, like parental alerts for self-harm searches and controls for AI experiences. This international move may be a preventive step against further scrutiny over child safety practices.
