Many daters on Hinge are frustrated with matches who simply like their profiles but never start a conversation. This often leads to an awkward silence, placing all the pressure on one person to make the first move. Instead of crafting something interesting, many resort to tired lines or fall back on boring small talk like asking, “How are you?”
To tackle this issue, Hinge has introduced “Convo Starters,” a new AI-powered feature designed to provide personalized tips for initiating chats. The tool aims to inspire daters and boost their confidence when sending that crucial first message. Now, when users like a profile, they will see three tailored tips beneath each photo and prompt. The AI analyzes a user’s profile and generates recommendations based on the specific content. For instance, if a potential match has a photo playing chess, Hinge might suggest starting a conversation about board games.
Hinge developed Convo Starters in direct response to user feedback. The company’s own research shows that 72% of Hinge daters are more likely to consider someone when a like comes with a message. Hinge data further reveals that users who include a comment with their like are twice as likely to secure a date. This new feature follows the earlier launch of an AI-driven Prompt Feedback tool, which assesses user prompts and offers advice to improve them by encouraging more elaboration and engaging personal details.
However, as Hinge integrates more AI features, many users, particularly from Gen Z, express discomfort with using AI in their dating lives. A Bloomberg Intelligence survey found that Gen Z feels more uneasy about using AI for tasks like drafting profile prompts and responding to messages compared to older generations.
Hinge’s parent company, Match Group, is investing significantly in this technology, dedicating approximately $20 million to $30 million toward its AI initiatives.
