Hauler Hero collects $16M for its AI waste management software

Hauler Hero has secured fresh funding as demand for its AI-powered waste management software continues to grow. The New York-based startup raised $16 million in a Series A round led by Frontier Growth. The round included participation from I2BF Global Ventures, K5 Global, and Somersault Ventures, among others. To date, Hauler Hero has raised more than $27 million in venture capital.

The company provides an all-in-one software platform for waste management companies. Its platform covers various functions, including customer relationship management, billing, and routing. Following a broader industry trend, Hauler Hero now plans to offer AI agents to its customers as well.

Hauler Hero was co-founded in 2020 by CEO Mark Hoadley and his brother-in-law Ben Sikma. They encountered outdated software while working on mergers and acquisitions in the waste sector and aimed to bring the industry into the modern era. Hoadley described the existing software as clunky and antiquated, comparing some to old video games or vintage cell phones.

The company reports significant traction, having facilitated 35 million trash pickups since its inception. Hoadley states the company has doubled its headcount, revenue, and customer base since announcing its seed round in late 2024.

Since that seed round, Hauler Hero has added new features. A notable product captures images from third-party cameras on garbage trucks and sends them directly to a software command center. This helps waste management companies confirm pickups, verify billing, and monitor their distributed fleet.

Hoadley acknowledged that some sanitation workers and their unions have been skeptical of this technology. However, he noted that most union agreements prevent the footage from being used for disciplinary measures against drivers. He added that the images can actually help reduce driver liability in accidents or in disputes over missed pickups. He compared the visibility to running a factory with a roof, stating it is essential for quality control.

The company is currently developing a trio of AI agents. Hero Vision is focused on automatically identifying service issues and revenue opportunities. Hero Chat is a chatbot for handling customer inquiries. Hero Route will use data to automatically adjust and optimize collection routes. Hoadley explained that their system contains vast amounts of data on pickups, work orders, and billing, which these AI agents can analyze and act upon.

Hauler Hero plans to use part of its new funding to commercialize these AI agents. It also aims to expand its offerings for municipal entities, which represent a growing portion of its customer base. Hoadley said this demand emerged organically and may be partly driven by the 2024 merger of two main competitors, Routeware and Wastech, which reduced options for government entities.

Looking ahead, the company is focused on fine-tuning and scaling its product, with potential for new additions. Hoadley expressed commitment to staying at the cutting edge and delivering value to customers by leveraging the latest tools.
