Hacker stole £700,000 from UK energy company by redirecting payment

British oil and gas company Zephyr Energy has reported a theft of £700,000, nearly one million dollars, from a U.S. subsidiary. Hackers stole the money by redirecting a payment intended for a contractor into their own account. The company is now working with banks to try and recover the funds. This type of attack, known as business email compromise, often involves hackers altering banking details during invoice processes. The FBI notes these attacks cause billions in losses annually. Zephyr states the incident is contained and normal operations continue. The company used standard security practices but has now added extra layers of protection. A spokesperson did not return a request for comment.
