Grammarly has introduced a new document-based interface, built on the technology of Coda, the productivity startup it acquired last year. The updated interface includes an AI assistant and a suite of AI tools designed for students and professionals, such as an AI grader, proofreader, and citation finder.
The interface follows a block-first approach, allowing users to insert tables, columns, separators, lists, and headers. Rich text blocks can also be added to highlight key information, provide tips, or display alerts. A sidebar houses the AI assistant, which can summarize text, answer questions, and offer writing suggestions.
Several AI-powered features are now available. “Reader Reactions” lets users select a reader persona and receive tailored feedback on their writing. “Grader” evaluates work based on instructor guidelines and publicly available course materials. “Citation Finder” helps locate and generate citations from public sources, while “Paraphraser” adjusts a text’s tone to match user preferences. Grammarly has also introduced agents capable of detecting plagiarism and AI-generated content.
Luke Behnke, VP of enterprise product at Grammarly, acknowledged that AI content detection tools can be inconsistent but claimed the company has refined its agent to be the most accurate available. He emphasized that the tool is not meant for enforcement but rather to help students identify potential AI-generated text before submission.
Grammarly aims to balance AI-assisted writing with AI detection, stating it has a “moral imperative” to prepare students for the workforce by teaching responsible AI use. The company plans to expand its AI agent integrations, as evidenced by its recent acquisition of email client Superhuman. Earlier this year, Grammarly secured $1 billion in funding from General Catalyst to support acquisitions and strengthen sales and marketing efforts.
