Google’s NotebookLM is now available to younger users as competition in the AIeducation space intensifies

Google’s AI note-taking app, NotebookLM, is now available to younger users after previously being limited to those 18 and older. The tech giant has expanded access to Google Workspace for Education users of any age and consumers aged 13 and up.

This change aims to give younger students access to an AI research tool that helps them better understand class materials. Students can now use features like converting notes into podcast-like audio summaries, organizing ideas with interactive mind maps, and more. NotebookLM also recently introduced video overviews, allowing users to turn notes, PDFs, and images into visual presentations.

The expansion comes as concerns grow about AI in education, particularly around data privacy and misuse. Google states that NotebookLM enforces stricter content policies for users under 18 to prevent inappropriate responses. Additionally, user chats and uploads are not reviewed by humans or used for AI training.

This move follows OpenAI’s launch of a study mode for ChatGPT, signaling increased competition among tech companies in the AI education space.
