Following the success of OpenAI’s video editing app Sora, which recently reached the top of the U.S. App Store, Google may be planning a visually focused revamp for its Gemini AI app. The company appears to be experimenting with a new user interface that would shift the app away from a chatbot-style design to a scrollable feed. This new feed would feature suggested prompts accompanied by eye-catching photos.
These changes were discovered in a recent version of the Gemini Android app by the news site Android Authority. The new interface is not yet available to the public. A reverse engineer enabled the hidden home screen by looking into the app’s code. On this new screen, shortcut buttons for functions like “Create Image” or “Deep Research” were moved higher up, followed by the scrollable feed of prompts.
A Google spokesperson stated that there is no announcement to be made just yet.
The examples of prompts shown suggest fun and creative tasks for users, such as “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” or “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Other prompts with colorful backgrounds offered different ideas for interacting with Gemini, like “Brainstorm out loud with Live,” or “Send me a daily news roundup.”
The goal of this redesign is to inspire users with specific suggestions on how to use Gemini’s AI capabilities, rather than leaving them to figure it out on their own. This revamp would also make the Gemini app more visually appealing and engaging.
If released to the public, this new interface could help Google better compete with rival OpenAI, whose ChatGPT app remains fairly minimalist and launches to a largely blank screen. Furthermore, it could capitalize on consumer interest in Google’s newer AI image model, Nano Banana. That model previously helped the Gemini app climb to the number one position on the App Store’s Top Charts in September, where it held the top ranking until it was displaced by Sora.
