As the new school year approaches, Google announced on Wednesday that it is launching a new tool called Guided Learning within Gemini. The tool functions like an AI tutor, designed to help users build a deep understanding of concepts rather than just providing answers.
This launch follows OpenAI’s recent introduction of Study Mode for ChatGPT, which also focuses on developing critical thinking skills instead of simply delivering answers. Both companies are responding to concerns that AI chatbots may undermine learning by providing direct answers without encouraging deeper comprehension.
With Guided Learning, Gemini breaks down problems step-by-step and adapts explanations to users’ needs. The feature uses images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes to help users test their knowledge rather than just giving them the solution. Google states that the tool will help users understand the “why” and “how” behind concepts.
Maureen Heymans, Google’s VP of Learning & Sustainability, explained that Guided Learning serves as a collaborative thinking partner, whether users are preparing for an exam, writing a paper, or exploring a new interest.
In addition to this feature, Google is enhancing Gemini to better support learning. The AI will now automatically include images, diagrams, and YouTube videos in responses to clarify complex topics. Users can also ask Gemini to generate flashcards and study guides based on quiz results or class materials.
Google also announced a free one-year subscription to its AI Pro plan for students in the U.S., Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. The plan includes expanded access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Veo 3, Deep Research, and other tools.
