Google has removed the names of more than 50 diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) groups from its list of organizations it substantially supports, according to a new watchdog report. The list, which outlines groups backed by Google’s U.S. Government Affairs and Public Policy team in 2024, no longer includes 58 DEI organizations, such as the Latino Leadership Alliance and the ACLU of Illinois.
The changes were discovered after the Trump administration announced plans to scrutinize companies openly supporting DEI initiatives. While it remains unclear whether Google continues to fund these groups privately, the removal from the public list raises questions about its commitment to such causes.
This follows a series of shifts in Google’s approach to DEI. Earlier this year, the company eliminated diversity hiring goals and removed language referencing “underrepresented” groups from its grant website. It also deleted mentions of “diversity” and “equity” from its responsible AI team’s webpage and omitted DEI references from its annual 10k filings.
The report notes that many of the dropped groups had mission statements emphasizing terms like “race” and “women,” which the Trump administration had advised federal agencies to reduce in official communications. These changes reflect broader trends in corporate DEI policies amid shifting political pressures.
