Google believes AI can improve the television experience. To that end, the company brought its Gemini AI to Google TV devices last November. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company is now demonstrating a series of new Gemini features that will soon arrive. These features will allow viewers to deeply explore topics, search for and creatively alter their personal photos and videos with AI, and perhaps most usefully, control the TV with voice commands instead of navigating complicated menus.
These Gemini features will first come to select TCL televisions before a broader rollout to other Google TV devices in the coming months.
Designed for large screens, Gemini for Google TV will let users talk to their TV to find something to watch. They can get a plot recap to catch up on a series or receive personalized recommendations through natural conversation. For example, you could ask Gemini to suggest a show that blends two people’s tastes, or help you find a movie when you can only remember the plot or an actor’s name. You could even ask, “What’s the new hospital drama everyone’s talking about?”
Gemini responds through a visually rich framework that adapts to each query, combining text, imagery, video context, and live sports updates as needed.
Google also sees potential for the TV to be an educational tool. At CES, the company demonstrated how asking a question about a topic can trigger a deep dive. A narrated interactive overview simplifies concepts, and users can ask follow-up questions to learn more.
Additionally, Gemini will let users search their Google Photos library for specific people or moments. They can apply artistic styles to photos and videos using AI and turn their memories into cinematic slideshows.
Perhaps the most practical feature is the ability to optimize TV settings with your voice. You can tell Gemini things like “the screen is too dim” or “I can’t hear the dialogue,” and it will adjust the relevant settings without you having to leave your show to search through menus.
The new Gemini features require Google TV devices to be running Android TV OS 14 or higher and an internet connection. Not all languages, countries, or devices will be supported at launch, and users need a Google account to access the Gemini for TV experience.
