Google Photos launches new video editing tools

Google Photos announced new features on Tuesday designed to simplify video editing and the creation of highlight reels. These updates include specialized templates with preset music and text overlays, alongside a completely redesigned video editor.

The new templates are currently rolling out to Android devices. They allow users to select a template and then choose their preferred photos and videos. Google Photos will automatically generate a professional-looking highlight reel that syncs the visuals to the beat of the preselected music, all in a matter of seconds.

The update also streamlines the process of creating highlight reels within the app. These reels are collections of clips and photos from a user’s library, such as memories from a vacation or a birthday celebration. To create one, users can navigate to the Create tab and select the “Highlight Video” option.

Additionally, the company introduced a newly redesigned video editor, available on both Android and iOS. This editor aims to be more user-friendly and includes a universal timeline for viewing all video clips and content in one place. It also features an adaptive canvas that adjusts the editing interface based on the user’s needs or the specific project. This new editor allows users to incorporate music and text directly into a single video clip. Google states this redesigned editor will now serve as the default video editing tool on Android.

Another new feature allows users to explore the Photos music library to find the perfect soundtrack for their highlight videos, available on both Android and iOS. Furthermore, Android users now have the option to add custom text overlays to their videos, enabling further personalization with new fonts, colors, and backgrounds.
