Google Photos’ latest feature lets you meme yourself

Google Photos now lets you create memes using your own pictures. The company introduced a new generative AI feature called “Me Meme” on Thursday. This tool allows you to combine a photo of yourself with a meme template to generate a personalized meme.

The feature will first be available to users in the United States. It was originally spotted in development last October by the blog Android Authority and was formally announced by Google on its Photos Community site.

According to Google, the feature is experimental, so generated images may not perfectly match the original photo. For the best results, Google suggests uploading well-lit, focused, and front-facing photos.

The addition is meant as a fun way to explore your photos and experiment with Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically Nano Banana. This same AI model powers other features in the Google Photos app, like the ability to recreate images in new styles such as cartoons or paintings.

While a lighthearted update, features like this help remind users to return to the Google Photos app to play with AI tools. Users often gravitate toward features that incorporate their own image, as seen with the successful launch of OpenAI’s Sora app for creating AI videos with friends.

“Me Meme” is not fully rolled out yet, so you may not see it immediately in your updated app. When available, it will appear under the “Create” tab. A Google representative stated the feature will reach U.S. iOS and Android users over the coming weeks.

To use the feature, you select a template or upload your own, then tap “add photo” and “Generate.” Google notes that more templates are being added over time. Once the AI creates the image, you can save it, share it, or tap “regenerate” for a new version.
