Google Fi to add AI-enhanced audio and RCS web messaging

On Tuesday, Google announced that its telecommunications service, Google Fi, is receiving several new updates. These include AI noise filters and RCS web messaging.

The company states that calls will now use AI-enhanced audio to reduce background noise and improve voice clarity. This improvement works even when speaking to someone on a landline or an older device, aiming to create more natural-sounding conversations. While the feature will be turned on automatically, users will have the option to disable it. AI-enhanced audio is rolling out next month.

For RCS web messaging, Google is updating its Messages for web integration with a new interface. This update includes full RCS support for sharing high-resolution photos and videos within message threads. The roll out for this update is scheduled for December.

Additionally, Google Fi is expanding the availability of its Wi-Fi Auto Connect+ feature. This service puts users on premium Wi-Fi to create a more reliable connection in crowded places like airports or shopping malls. The company is expanding availability to millions of locations, including major airports such as LAX, ORD, and JFK, as well as participating shopping malls and stores. The feature works automatically and is available at no extra cost. Google also states it is the only major carrier to automatically secure online activity with an encrypted connection when using this premium Wi-Fi. Users will know they are connected when they see the W+ icon in their status bar.

Google also announced that the Google Fi app is introducing personalized AI-powered summaries. These summaries explain charges, detail monthly changes, and illustrate how plan adjustments could affect future costs.

As part of the announcement, Google Fi is launching a limited-time promotion for new subscribers. It offers 50 percent off for 15 months when customers bring their own phone and join either the Unlimited Essentials or the Unlimited Plan.
