Google and PayPal team up on agentic commerce

PayPal announced on Wednesday a new multi-year partnership with Google. This collaboration will see the payment giant using Google’s AI technology to create new AI-powered shopping experiences. Meanwhile, PayPal’s solutions will be integrated across Google’s products. The companies will also work together on hosting and improving PayPal’s technology infrastructure through Google Cloud.

While specific details on the new shopping experiences were not provided, the companies outlined their contributions. Google will supply its AI technology and expertise, and PayPal will leverage its global payment infrastructure, along with its personalization and identity solutions.

Additionally, both companies will join others to advocate for the adoption of Google’s new Agent Payments Protocol, which was announced on Tuesday. This open protocol is designed to enable purchases initiated by AI agents and has already received backing from over 60 merchants and financial institutions.

As part of the agreement, PayPal will be listed as a key payment provider for card payments in services like Google Cloud, Google Ads, and Google Play. Other PayPal products being integrated by Google include its branded checkout, the Hyperwallet payouts service, and the PayPal Payouts service.
