Google and Intel have expanded their multiyear partnership. Google Cloud will continue using Intel’s Xeon processors, including the new Xeon 6 chips, for AI and cloud tasks. The companies will also co-develop custom infrastructure processing units, or IPUs, which started in 2021. This expansion meets industry demand for CPUs, which are crucial for running AI models despite GPUs being used for training them. Intel’s CEO stated that scaling AI requires balanced systems with both CPUs and IPUs. This focus on CPUs comes amid a growing global shortage for these chips.
