GitHub CEO to step down

GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke announced on Monday that he is stepping down from his role. Dohmke will stay at the Microsoft-owned company until the end of the year before leaving to become “a founder again,” as he mentioned in a blog post.

According to reports, Microsoft will not directly replace his position. Instead, GitHub leadership will now report to several Microsoft executives.

Dohmke reflected on GitHub’s growth, stating that the platform has never been stronger, with over 1 billion repositories and forks and more than 150 million developers. He highlighted the increasing number of open-source projects and contributions, noting that AI projects alone have doubled in the past year. He also emphasized GitHub’s unmatched presence in companies of all sizes.

This leadership change comes as GitHub faces rising competition from companies like Google and Cursor in the AI tools space for programmers.
