French police and Europol conducted a search of the local office of X, as announced by the Paris prosecutor’s office on Tuesday. This raid is part of an ongoing investigation launched in 2025 into allegations of fraudulent data extraction from an automated processing system by an organized group.
The cybercrime unit of the French prosecutors’ office has now expanded the investigation to cover other serious alleged crimes. These include complicity in the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, privacy violations, and Holocaust denial.
This expansion comes amid widespread criticism directed at X and its owner, Elon Musk. They are facing scrutiny for allowing the company’s Grok AI to be used to generate nonconsensual imagery, including child abuse material, of people on its platform.
Elon Musk, who purchased X in 2022, and former X chief executive Linda Yaccarino were summoned for questioning on April 20. Unnamed X staffers were also summoned for the same week, according to the prosecutor’s announcement. Neither X nor spokespeople for eMed, where Yaccarino is now chief executive, responded to requests for comment.
A spokesperson for the Paris prosecutor’s office, Maylis De Roeck, confirmed the raid in a statement. The spokesperson stated that the objective is to ensure platform X’s compliance with French law, given that it operates within the national territory.
