France to ditch Windows for Linux to reduce reliance on US tech

France is moving its government computers from Microsoft Windows to the open-source Linux operating system. This decision aims to reduce reliance on U.S. technology and regain control over its digital destiny. Minister David Amiel stated the government can no longer accept a lack of control over its data and infrastructure.

This shift is part of a broader European push for digital sovereignty, driven by growing instability from the Trump administration. Since taking office in 2025, Trump has weaponized sanctions and attacked international institutions, cutting off access to U.S. services for critics.

France did not provide a specific timeline for the Windows switch. This follows earlier moves, like ditching Microsoft Teams for the French-made Visio tool and planning to migrate its health data platform to a trusted system by year’s end.
