Elon Musk’s Boring Company has reportedly stopped work on a tunnel to the Las Vegas airport. This follows an incident late Wednesday night where a worker sustained a crushing injury. Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has opened an investigation into the event.
The Clark County Fire Department received an emergency call at 10:12 p.m. local time. They dispatched an 18-person rescue crew to the construction site. While the exact details of the incident remain unclear, the injured worker was lifted out of the job site using an on-site crane. The fire department has reported that the worker is in stable condition.
The Boring Company has spent the last several years developing an underground transportation system in Las Vegas. Its existing tunnels connect the Las Vegas Convention Center to a number of nearby hotel casinos. This system has provided over three million rides across 3.5 miles of active tunnels. The company’s larger ambition is to connect nearly all of Las Vegas with this underground network, including the airport.
This is not the first safety incident for the project. Dozens of workers have been injured during the construction of these tunnels. The company’s former safety manager for the Las Vegas project has publicly voiced concerns about the dangers faced by employees at these work sites.
